As the leaves turn golden and the crisp air of fall settles in, it’s the perfect time for Illinois homeowners to give their windows some much-needed attention. Cleaning your windows before the fall season will not only ensure a clear view of the beautiful autumn scenery but also help maintain the longevity and functionality of your windows.
Let Dilworth Windows and Doors share some valuable tips on how to clean your windows and keep them pristine during the colder months!

Gather the Right Tools
Before starting the window cleaning process, gather the necessary tools. You will need:
- A bucket
- A squeegee
- A soft cloth or microfiber towel
- A window cleaning solution (or a DIY solution of water and mild dish soap)
- A soft-bristle brush or old toothbrush for corners and frames
Remove Debris Before Cleaning
Begin by using a soft brush or cloth to remove any loose dirt, dust, and cobwebs from the window frames and sills. Gently wipe away debris with a clean cloth or microfiber towel.
If you are using a store-bought window cleaning solution, follow the instructions on the bottle. Alternatively, you can create your own solution by combining one part water with one part mild dish soap. Avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage or stain the window glass.

Start with the Frames and Sills
Dip a cloth or brush into the cleaning solution and scrub the window frames and sills. Pay attention to hard-to-reach areas and corners and consider using an old toothbrush to clean out any stubborn dirt or grime.

Clean the Glass & Polish
Dip the squeegee in the cleaning solution, then starting from the top corner of the window, swipe it vertically down the glass using a steady and even pressure. Wipe the squeegee blade after each swipe with a clean cloth or towel to avoid streaks. Repeat this process until the entire window is clean.
Use a clean, lint-free cloth or microfiber towel to dry the windows and remove any remaining streaks. Polish the glass with a dry cloth for a sparkling, streak-free finish.
